Colonial San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende is located in the state of Guanajuato. This general area of Mexico is known as El Bajio. It is about 4 hours north of Mexico City (by car or bus), one hour from the city of Guanajuato, and about one hour from Querétaro.
Recently named a World Heritage City by UNESCO, San Miguel holds onto it's colonial traditions while also offering modern conveniences. It is not uncommon to see donkeys carrying potting soil or firewood cruising down cobble stoned streets. The mercado is filled with food, flowers, and goods and remains as it has been for years. But we also have large grocery stores, an 8-plex movie theater (with movies in English as well as Spanish), and gourmet restaurants.
At 6500 ft. elevation, the surrounding landscape is desert, with a rainy season in the summer months. Normally, it only rains in the late afternoon and because of the altitude never gets humid or muggy. Winters are usually mild, although there may be significant extremes in terms of the temperatures at night and during the day (down to freezing at night and sunny and warm in the afternoon). Springtime welcomes the blooming of the purple jacaranda trees with dry, warm weather. Fall evenings can be chilly, but the days are warm and the hillsides are gorgeous shades of green after the rains.
